The 5 essential ingredients for success

Kia ora Koutou,

Throughout my life, I have been successful in many ways.  I have genuinely succeeded in most things I put my heart and soul into.

At a young age, I was a very happy kid and I was a good sportsman and during my school years fell in love with cross country running (I know, what was I thinking?), but I truly did.  In standard three (year 5) the school had its annual cross country races and to my complete surprise, I managed to come in 2nd place, to my schoolmate Richard Barlow. During that year I would try my hardest to beat him but I would suffer from stitch and could never seem to take him albeit he would only beat me by a few metres in the end.

I was playing football and my grandad would travel 40 kilometres to pick me up and take me to my games. During our conversation on the way to football, grandad asked me how school was going and I told him about my stitch.  he smiled and simply said, “Start singing while you run” and “train harder”.

The following week I did what grandad had told me.  I was pretty fit anyway but I started to run more and during my runs, I would sing “Waltzing Matilda” a song my grandparents taught me, which seem to work.  Singing helps you to regulate your breathing and it’s a great way to prevent stitch.

The next week I beat Richard by a decent margin.  I went through Plimmerton School as a champion at cross country and even in the first form (year 7), I was fastest in the school being able to beat all the kids in the year above.  At the regional competition, I run for the school as a senior during both my First and Second forms (year 7 & 8) and won my races by a few hundred metres each time.

The reason I was so good was pretty simple, I loved what I did, I received great advice, I trained well, I was lucky to be in a school that encouraged kids to run cross country and I had some competition to keep me sharp, I was a very happy kid.

This is very similar to the Five step formula, I and many other coaches will tell you, to be successful in life.

 #1: Do what you love
You spend a lot of time at work, it is so important you do what you love or over 50% of it is wasted.

#2: Just do it
As Nike tells us to. Find a way to follow your dreams, the fact you are following your own plan will make you happier even though you may need to work for someone else or work towards the career you will love. Don’t wait for the stars to align, they only align when they know from your actions what you want to do.  Make it clear to them and they will respond in kind.

A little bit of planning is good, but that’s all you need.  Passion and positive actions will do the rest.

#3: Surround yourself with success-minded people
One of the reasons I set up my business networking groups in the area I live is to ensure I am working with like-minded people.  When you are surrounded by successful people you can learn from each other and gain the knowledge you need faster than you can by yourself.

Celebrated success expert Jim Rohn, who is no longer with us, used to talk about something he called the Law of Averages – average the income of the five people you hang out with the most, and that’s what your income is likely going to be.

This is because the way that people tend to think is contagious.

Ensure you spend regular time with people who are positive and looking to achieve BIG dreams, they support you and your dreams, do this and your clients and your business or career will benefit!

#4: Don’t stop growing
Don’t settle for what you have in life.  Demand more of yourself think of ways you can not only continue to grow yourself but help those positive people around you.  Learn and help others, If we all did this, the world would be a much better place.

#5: Smile
People love to deal with happy people.  Whenever you are feeling a little lost, take a good look at yourself and start working on getting your smile back.  Make the changes you need in your life to bring back the happy you.

My biggest success is my family, they not only make me proud to be their dad they also help me smile when times get tough.  I am very grateful to have been blessed with such a wonderful whanau.

Want to grow your business?

Whether you are starting out or have an established business you are wanting to grow there are some actions you need to take if you want to succeed quickly.

Be Great

The first step to finding success is to make sure you be the best business you can.  If you sell products you are better selling great products than cheap knock-offs.  Businesses who sell poor products and services might con the marketplace for a short time, but in general, you will be found out and as much as word of mouth can grow a business it is very quick at killing those who fail to deliver what they promise.

This means you keep developing your skills, and developing your staffs’ skills if you offer a service and you check and if possible test any products you represent.

My grandfather was a cobbler and owned a very successful Shoe Store, and while I was growing up often I would visit and sit in the back room and observe him at work.  I was there a few times when salesmen would arrive with shoes they were trying to promote for my grandad to sell in his store.  The first thing grandad would do is test the quality by bending the shoes often from toe to heal.  On one occasion I watched in awe as he bent the shoe and it totally fell apart.  Needless to say, that brand never made his shelves.

Grandad sold a variety of shoes with a range of prices from the very affordable to the upmarket shoes many of the wealthier customers would buy – they all had to pass his test.  He also repaired shoes at a time when many shoe shops did not offer this service.  I use to play with the scraps of leather and he would even watch over me when the shop was quiet and let me use the sewing machine. He would talk to me about the different leathers and quality, he was an expert at what he did.  He used this knowledge to help customers (Especially families on a budget) and his reputation for providing a great customer service and great products had customers travelling to his store from miles away. He had built himself a great brand not only for his store but for himself.

This would not have happened if he did not have all three elements, provide a great service, sell great products and give great customer service.

Network

Most successful business people understand the importance of networking and knowledge sharing.  Networking is possibly the greatest way to create champions for your business.  For people to trust you they need to get to know you and your personal brand is as important as the business you run.  When you join a network, you must work it, attend meetings and present who you are and what your business is.  Over time as people grow comfortable with you, they may try your products or services, and often they will recommend you just because you are that person they know from that network, that does that.

In today’s digital world you can also network with people thousands of miles away using online forums and social media groups.

Smart business owners do not just attend conferences for the information but get there because of the value of the networks they can establish, these can turn your local business into something much bigger if you build contacts, then relationships well enough.

Marketing

All businesses need to market themselves, whether you have your logo on your car or you have invested in business cards, signs, or leased a building in a high traffic area.  The key to marketing is to find out where your prospective customers hang out and make sure you are present.  This may be the local radio station (TIP. listen to who is advertising and if they are prospective customers there is a good chance they will hear your advert while listening out for theirs). A well-read local newspaper (becoming rarer each year), it may be an industry magazine or an online community.

Going digital is almost a must these days that means having a MODERN responsive website (over 70% of first-time visitors will be with a mobile device) that people can find you on.

TIP: People trust a business with a great website and will try you before your competition, also, social media sites use websites as an indicator of a legitimate business.  So don’t try and cut corners and just build a FREE Facebook page, invest in your website.

Before you go spending all your money on a website remember you will need some budget to help people find your website.  Failure to do this is very common and can really hurt a new business.  Luckily there are plenty of affordable options these days to build a high-quality web presence.

Cutting to the chase, if you own a business as well as registering your website as a ‘business’ on the major search engines like ‘Google My Business’ you should be building your social media presence, most likely on Facebook or Instagram. This is the most cost-effective way to promote your business and website.

You should also be building your personal brand and depending on what your business is that means thinking about using platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and whatever else comes out that attracts the people you want to sell to.

Don’t expect results overnight, you need to build trust and with marketing that is producing good quality content that explains the benefits of your business consistently and persistently.  Once you are established with a great brand in your marketplace then the magic will start to happen.

I hope you found this information useful.

Build your personal brand to succeed

Kia ora Koutou

I live in New Zealand and people here generally do not like to promote themselves.  We like to be humble and there really is quite a tall poppy syndrome that goes on here.

Unfortunately, the world is changing so rapidly us Kiwi’s just need to start getting over it.  That does not mean we cannot be humble as you choose your brand and how you want to be seen, but it does mean putting yourself out there whether you like it or not.

The BIG game changer has obviously been social media which is creating more superstars every day than any other medium on the planet.

So whether you just want to snag your first job, or grow your career or accelerate the growth of your business, you will need to start thinking about building your PERSONAL brand.  Yes, you can build your business brand, but things will start accelerating when you realise it is your personal brand everyone is really interested in.

Yes, you can also choose to stay out of this game (and it is just that – a game, so have FUN).  Many people will make it big without social media.  However, thousands if not millions of people just like you will achieve their dreams much quicker by jumping in the deep end and going for it.

Where to start?

A great resource which will either inspire you or not is the book Crushing It by Gary Vaynerchuk.  The time to grab this book is now as you can download an audio copy for FREE from Amazon.  Once you have listened to this you may be like me and order the physical version and start using it to help you understand the nuances of the major platforms available to you today.

Secondly, signup to at least Facebook and Instagram and just start using them.

And finally, if you want support from a personal coach to guide you through getting started with either building your first resume or developing your career plan and/or build your dream business – contact me.

The importance of continuous learning

So, you finished College, University or your trade course, started work or founded a cool business, it must be time to forget about learning and focus on making the most of the time you have, right?

Although it is fair to say you may reduce your hours of learning, learning is essential for the rest of our lives.  Developing a habit of upskilling your knowledge and skills is a very important factor in living a full and successful life.

WHY?

In terms of living a healthy life, those who love to learn and do so until the day they leave this earth, are more likely to avoid degenerative deseases like dementia.  They are also more likely to live a life of great social relationships where they are happy meeting new people and developing new contacts (outside of close friends and family) which is a proven factor in living a long life.

We can all improve our knowledge and as we grow older we can become ‘experts’ in the the things that most interest us.  It is also very healthy to keep our brain working on positive new learning adventures which bring us new rewards and pleasures throughout our lifes journey.

Ways to learn?

Continual learning does not mean we have study for our master’s qualification at University (albeit there is nothing wrong with that), it can be learning things we are most interested in or gaining new skills and knowledge for our chosen field of work, this could be through courses, mentor sessions, online study etc.

Learning can also be simply picking up a (reputable) book that provides insights into a new skill or way of doing something.

There are video’s, audio files and night classes after work at your disposal.  Most communities have centres where you can learn new skills, meet new friends.

Learning is more fun when you are learning a skill you would love to have.

A great way to learn more is to become an expert and teach others, this will drive you to become more knowledgeable and possibly join (or start) a mastermind group who help each other advance their knowledge. Most great teachers and personal coaches will tell you that learning for them is a fulltime activity.

It is also more fulfilling when you learn with a group of people who share the same interests expanding your social relationships, networks and providing your brain with the nourishment it graves for.

Learning new things is a great way to meet new people, develop your skills  and have more to talk about at dinner parties.  It is a great way to help you live a healthy and fulfilled life, and that is what it is all about – right?

Did you find this helpful?  Please share it with people you care about.

The importance of networking

Whether you are building your business or developing a career there is one essential skill that you must put time into – networking.

Developing a network is one of the most beneficial things everyone can do. Having a community around helps make running your business or developing your career so much easier for many reasons.

  1. You have a network of people that you can ask advice from.
  2. You have other businesses/people that you can partner or collaborate with.
  3. You have the ability to develop relationships with people and gain insight on a different perspective that you can use to innovate.
  4. Overtime you will build relationships where you help each other, share ideas, help solve challenges – within your network everyone will have something to offer each other.
  5. Businesses will increase sales (through network referrals) and individuals will be thought of when job opportunities match their skills.

However, many people struggle with building up their professional network; after all, when you are taking care of all of your other responsibilities how can you also have time to socialise?

So, yes we have to take time to build our network.  I am not talking about turning up to meetings but, consciously making time each week to develop your personal network.  Joining networking groups is a great way to start, however it is just that, a start.  Developing YOUR network is what I am talking about here, when you meet people through network groups, industry functions, training etc actively look for people who you could network with.

The best way to start is to think about how you can help others in your network, what can you offer them? Once you get started you will find over time your network will naturally sort it self out.

I have a number of ways I manage my personal network/s.

  • Coffee meetings (you do not necessarily have to meet with everyone at the same time)
  • Build my own network groups online (usually I will identify people in these groups I want to work with face to face)
  • I manage my own network group/s which meet either monthly or quarterly.

If you are new to networking join a group, work with others who you identify as great networkers, or ask your colleagues and contacts if they know of a great group.

I am a fan of starting your own network, nurturing it by looking at what you can offer those you meet with and working on this activity every week.

I hope this article inspires you to either start networking or refresh your approach to this skill.  I have no doubt it is the single most successful way to build your business or develop your career.

“People who are crazy enough to think they can change the world – often do”

Building diversity into your organisation using Te ao Māori

First of all ‘Diversity’ is important because our country, increasingly consist of various cultural, racial, gender, people with a range of abilities and disabilities as well as many different ethnic groups. We can learn from one another, but first we must have a level of understanding about each other in order to facilitate collaboration and cooperation.  It also makes perfect sense economically to engage with people from all groups in your community.

A diverse organisation has more intellectual power, provided people can be ‘who they are’ at work.  This then allows them to share their culture, knowledge and skills, it makes them feel valued and they are more likely to repay their employer with loyalty and passion.

A great starting point for everyone (Employers, staff, prospective staff) can be to adopt the following Māori values;

  1. Manaakitanga
One of the fundamental principles in Māori culture, manaakitanga is the enactment of mana-enhancing behaviour towards others. It is a measurement of people’s ability to extend kindness and generosity. The concept of manaakitanga includes understanding tapu sacredness and mana dignity. In our relationships, we are acutely aware of our mana and the mana of others.
  2. Whanaungatanga
The people are our wealth. Whanaungatanga is about being part of a larger whole. Māori are related to all living things and thus express whanaungatanga with their surroundings. Whanaungatanga is about knowing you are not alone, but that you have a wider set of connections that provide support, assistance, nurturing, guidance and direction when needed. Understanding of roles and responsibilities are also part of whanaungatanga. Whanaungatanga embodies the ambitions of collectivism. Interdependence with each other rather than independence is the goal.
  3. Rangatiratanga
Rangatiratanga describes the attributes of a rangatira leader and how these are given expression through humility, diplomacy, generosity, resilience and empowerment. We understand the importance of practicing what you preach, walking the talk, following through on commitments made, integrity and honesty.
  4. Kotahitanga
Focused on developing and maintaining a unity of purpose and direction and avoiding approaches and decisions that lead to division and disharmony. A commitment through oneness of mind and action to achieving its vision emulates the practice of Kotahitanga. All are encouraged to make their contribution, to have their say. It is the consensus of the collective that determines what is best for the group.

There are many other values we could add, however I believe if an organisation truly adopts these values and nurture their staff to understand them fully, you then have the environment you will need to attract diverse talent and more importantly develop an environment where they most like to stay.

This is not about putting the values up on your wall, its about running masterclass sessions where the value is fully discussed and people are encourage to talk about this approach and how they feel about them.  Management needs to re-enforce these values and champions within the team should also be encouraged to help people understand WHY and how they are used.

So how do we build our Diverse team?

The majority of organisations will need to change the way they recruit by moving from a reactive ‘I hope people apply to my advert’ to a proactive environment where you build talent networks, marketing channels, talent pools, develop appropriate employment branding to use in these channels i.e. do not just post job adverts into them.

You will use different approaches to target the diverse audience you are looking for.  Essential if you want to build a true talent pool of diverse people, is to develop relationships with other organisations that are happy collectively working with you to build a pool for your group.  This concept is foreign for many organisations, yet collectiveness is such a powerful tool for finding talent, keeping the pool engaged and helping each other when looking for ‘hard to find talent’.

Get to know each other.

Once everyone truly understands the values above you can start to get to know each other in a ‘safe’ environment.  Simple staff activities can help with this process.  In the past I have found ‘pot luck’ lunches where people bring food they normally cook and share with each other and explain where the recipes came from etc.

Another approach is to have someone write staff stories which are shared across the team.  These stories bring people closer together as they see similar cuircumstances and find common ground to talk about.

When will you know you have a diverse organisation?

When your board, executive team and your workforce are full with diversity.  At this stage you will not only see a diverse workforce but you have the chance to create a great culture and high performing team who are able to tackle problems many different ways using ideas and solutions from a the range of different thinking people you have.

Hope you found this helpful.

Persistence and using the Law of Accumulation

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “press on” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race”– Calvin Coolidge

Persistence and understanding the Law of Accumulation will help you achieve things you may never have thought possible.

The Law of Accumulation
Everything great and worthwhile in human life is an accumulation of hundreds, sometimes thousands, of tiny efforts and sacrifices that nobody ever sees or appreciates.

Understanding that little wins will accumulate and persistent actions, education, training while building your financial base will allow you over time to achieve massive goals is important.  If you wish to decrease the time to achieve these things you need to increase the volume of little things and the most important thing to develop is your knowledge.

If you wish to decrease the time to achieve these things you need to increase the volume of ‘little’ things especially knowledge.

We have all heard the saying “How do you eat an Elephant?” “One bite at a time” or “A journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step”.

These sayings illustrate the Law of Accumulation.  The only thing stopping you from succeeding in your quest is when you decide to quit.  Being persistent and determined and understanding the importance of every little win accumulated will eventually bare the fruit you are after is a mindset I hope all my children adopt.  I hope you adopt think about adopting this mindset too.

However, there are ways to use the Law of Accumulation, that will help you accelerate your quest for success.

  1.  Using the Law of accumulation to improve your knowledge and skills, advancing your ability to find answers or solutions for the hurdles that may lay ahead. Whether you do this through an education provider or simply through your own persistent study, reading, writing and experimenting will help you move things along.
  2. Gaining experience working with those who have been there before, working with a coach or mentor until you can learn no more from them, then seeking out others that have the experience to help.
  3. Accumulating funds and creating assets that help you generate the income to purchase the tools, training and knowledge to keep momentum working in your favour will allow you to do things faster over time.  Building a solid asset base should be a priority the moment you start earning.

All of these actions above will help you keep growing and learning and accumulating those little wins that will help you achieve your greatest dreams.

Sometimes days, weeks, months may pass by with only small wins, so it is important to celebrate every little win and this will help your motivation to be persistent even when you take what feels like backward steps. Appreciate each day for what you have learned that day and make a fresh start to accumulate a win tomorrow.

So do not despair when you hit a wall, fall down and feel there is nothing more you can do – because there is.  You can start again, maybe you needed to rethink your approach, change your approach, research and learn something new, train harder? find help? find motivation? whatever it is pick up and go again.

Be persistent, use the Law of Accumulation every day.

And never stop.

Making Quantum Leaps

In your personal life or business life, you may need to change the way you are approaching things if you want to take big steps forward.  In fact, if you are not making progress in leaps and bounds then it is time to embrace the science of the quantum leap.

Simply you can achieve more if you really want too, but it may mean taking a very different approach to things, even if you think your approach is working you will find exploring how to make a quantum leap is the answer to accelerating your success well beyond what you can imagine.

We have all heard of the saying “If you don’t change what you are doing, your results will remain the same” – and in most cases, this is the same no matter how hard you work.  In fact taking quantum leaps get you there quicker and easier than putting in more hours and working harder – brain power rather than burning energy.

Don’t be happy with small advances,  truly if you are not making great gains then it is time to think about how you can make a quantum leap.

So what is a Quantum Leap?

A Quantum Leap in the terms of this blog is a change that makes a significant difference to a person or business that accelerates your success.  And believe it or not often quantum leaps are small adjustments that create massive moves forward.

It is highly likely you already have a quantum leap in your mind, however, for some reason you are holding yourself back in exploring taking the action.  Your ‘gut’ is to make a change, however, you sabotage yourself by either listening to someone else who tells you to stick with the status quo ‘it is safe’ or worst than that, you prevent yourself from taking action on an idea simply because you fear failure.

Changing the way you think

The first thing you can change that will help you find a quantum leap is to embrace failure, for it is often an essential part of this journey.  Looking at and sometimes exploring a variety of different options on a regular basis can help you find that sudden solution that catapults you and/or your business forward.

Let’s apply basic logic to this – the more options you try whether they succeed or fail, the more likely you are to find that once action that jumps you forward.  All you need to get started is to understand where you want to be – and dream big.

The solution could be changing the way you approach things, or fundamentally understanding how important it is for you to strive to be a better all round person. Just making the decision to start on a more positive path is guaranteed to make a difference.

Starting to look out for potential quantum leaps each and every day is the approach to take.  In many cases, people actually have an idea in their head that may provide a quantum leap but for what ever reason they never get around to taking action.  These are the people that look at other very successful people and say “I had the very same idea” or “they stole my idea” the only difference between them and the other person is the other person acted upon the idea.

In sport they call this process ‘lifting your head’ making sure you look around to understand all your options and taking the best one – so adopt this strategy lift your head explore more and find great options – then take them!  The top football clubs around the world actually measure how often a player lifts their head, it is the measure of a great player.

The top football clubs around the world actually measure how often a player lifts their head, it is the measure of a great player.

So OK is not just good enough for you, finding a better way becomes your norm.

Personal Growth

This is where you start.  Let’s face it we all know of things we could do that would possibly help us personally take a leap forward, whether that be joining the gym, taking a course, reading more positive books, being more grateful, changing bad habits to good habits.  The trick is to keep pursuing these throughout your life and strive to become a ‘great’ person.  It really is as simple as that.

Before anything else, know what you want to achieve with your life and write it down.

Business Growth

You need a written plan of where you want to get to, how you get there is not as important if each day you look for ways to move positively towards your goal/s.  By keeping an eye out for quantum leaps and taking more chances with the ideas that ‘in your gut’ could help you take a giant leap forward you have set yourself in the right direction.

NIKE came up with the saying ‘Just do it’ for a very good reason.

In summary

I am very lucky that in my life I have experienced a number of quantum leaps which have included stepping into unchartered territory, applying for and successfully securing senior positions in companies I worked for in my younger days, building a multi-million dollar business from a simple idea which changed the way people recruited people.

I was lucky when I was young that people encouraged me to push forward.  As we age we have fewer supporters encouraging us and it is our own job to mature and make this a positive habit.  The risks seem too dangerous.  The reality is for many not making a change can be more fatal, we were not designed to stand still.

Searching for my own quantum leap to become a better person, I am now working on projects which focus on helping those who sincerely want to embark on the same journey.

Hope this was helpful

Find your Motivation then use SMART goals to succeed

Once you have defined what motivates you through working through what you want to achieve in your life, and understanding where you are in terms of your all-around balance between Mental, Physical, Emotional and Spiritual desires the ability to set goals and make plans to achieve them is KEY to success.

Goal-setting will do more to help you achieve the things you want in life than will anything else.

The reward for establishing goals and making plans for them is being able to choose the kind of life you want to live.

Less than 3% of adults have written goals. Less than 1% review and rewrite their goals daily. A goal that is not written is still just a dream.

That means, if today you started writing down your dreams, and specify your goals every day from today forward, you would immediately move into the top 1% of all people!

If you’re in a leadership role, goal-setting is essential to motivating your team. But if you really want to maximise your goal-setting and goal-achieving skills, you must set SMART goals.

This acronym stands for:

S = Specific
M = Measurable
A = Achievable
R = Relevant
T = Time-bound

Most of the problems with goal-achieving are related to a lack of clarity in setting the goal in the first place. With SMART goals, both your personal and business goals will be perfectly clear to everyone.

The other problems will arise if you do not have the right ‘positive’ motivations and or your people are not motivated to succeed.

TEAM ACHIEVEMENT

DEFINE WINNING so people know what they are striving for.

A manager’s job is to ensure his or her people achieve their goals.  If people have been assigned too much, it is the manager’s job to reassess, provide support or distribute parts of the project/task to other members of the team making sure everyone WINS.

You build great teams by getting great results, reward everyone for the win and build a strong team culture.  MAJOR work goals should always have celebrations attached, these MAJOR rewards that acknowledge the performance of the individuals and the team.

Ensuring you motivate teams to achieve this success.

To get to major goals you need to plan your milestones, each milestone should come with an appropriate award, not necessarily of large monetary value but something that acknowledges the achievement.

Map your project success to the teams individual personal goals and you have the formula for success, retention and a happy work environment.

This all takes planning and the first 5-10% of planning should be identifying what the major goals is, then what milestones you need to get there.

PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT

Do something every day that moves you towards achieving your major goals.

Go Succeed!
