Is your body screaming at you to detox?

Photo by Three Bunnies on Unsplash

There are so many reasons you should detox your body regularly.  There are so many of us who persevere with problems that if not dealt with will turn into something much more serious.  Yes, I am talking from experience.

For many years I ignored what my body was telling me and not only was it affecting my quality of life it nearly ended it for me.

So, I have listed below the common signs your body is sending you yelling “clean me up”.

1. You constantly feel fatigued, stressed or overwhelmed
2. You experience unexplained headaches and/or brain fog
3. You often indulge in fried foods, processed meat, dairy, gluten, processed foods, refined sugar or fast food
4. You catch colds and viruses easily and/or are often on medication
5. You’re not at your ideal weight
6. You have breakouts and blemishes and/or a dull complexion
7. You’re exposed to common environmental toxins – including artificial fragrances and household chemicals
8. You experience uncomfortable and/or irregular digestion
9. You often feel emotionally drained, unmotivated or lack energy and enthusiasm for life
10. You have trouble sleeping through the night

In the past, I could have listed most of these.  If you have 1-2 then it is time to start thinking about a detox if you have more its action time!

So what to do?

Well, the good news is most of the time it is pretty easy to get things sorted.  In the past, I have used the Liver Cleansing Diet to great effect.  As I have aged I found I needed more than just this very good diet to correct things.  I also decided recently “Enough is Enough” I could not keep putting my body (mind & soul) through hell.  It was time to change my ways.

I am so lucky to have come across the Diabetes Clinic just as it started here in New Zealand.  Although I do not have diabetes, due to the drugs I am on after major surgery a few years ago I was back to being obese verging on Pre Diabetes and I knew enough that I certainly did not want to end up with Type 2 Diabetes and all the issues complications and early departure from this earth that can mean.

I made three great decisions, I changed GP’s and found Matt Shelton in Plimmerton a doctor who was also into natural solutions.  I started working with Kimba Lawrence and Julie Buckley (Chef) from the Diabetes Clinic who have helped me understand the benefits of fasting and how to do this safely as well as sharpened my knowledge around what are the right foods to eat.

The third person I have recently met and started working with is Jason Bei a third generation Chinese Acupuncturist in Waikanae who is helping me sort out my plumbing and introducing me to Chinese herbs and a health practice that has 2000+ years of knowledge behind it.

I also take some supplements which are helping.  I personally think there is a number of great products out there but if you would like to know what I am using visit NeoLife

I am finally feeling like my health is on track.  I have some work to do and I certainly hope you do not put your body through what I have with mine before you take action.

I really hope you find this information helpful.

Over 50? Whats next?

So you are getting close to 50 years old or maybe you are like me and now into your 50’s?

Life is definitely for the living and if you haven’t already leveraged yourself, the time is now.  Over 50 you should be living a lifestyle of your own design.  Much easier if you have made the leap into self-employment during your 40’s but maybe you just need more security so you kept working for someone else.  What scares me about that is the number of people I chat with who have been made redundant, hit a health issue, or are still raising a family and struggling to make it week by week.  That’s just not living.

So, what do you do?  If you have been good and saved heaps of money you might buy a lifestyle business.  One you know you will love that will give you the time and income to live the life you love.  If this is you, you might as well stop reading.

If however, for whatsoever reason you are approaching 50 or clicked over this mark and you still have not leveraged yourself for a better life then here are my tips for you.

  1. You have skills and experience others should be interested in.
  2. By now you should have an idea of what you love to do.
  3. The kids should have left home or at least be earning, freeing up some cash for you.  If not, seriously consider downsizing, you will need some cash-flow while you redesign your future.
  4. .  You possibly already know people who would appreciate your skills.  Start to have conversations and making plans.
  5. Find a personal coach to guide you so you accelerate your plan and navigate through those first years of whatever it is you decide to do.  You should not need a lot of guidance if you are making choices based on things you love to do.
  6. Your biggest market is possibly other ‘over 50’s’ just like you so make connections, join appropriate network groups and start building or rebuilding your personal network.
  7. Start to read positive books that inspire you to learn and go for your goals.
  8. Your health and happiness is now the number 1 priority.

So it’s simple. Build your own business and preferably one you love to work in. Ideally, you should have thought about this in your early 40’s but I know, you were just too busy then.

If your cash position is poor, downsize.  Rebuild a life that makes sense the next 50 years should be the best of your life.  Money is not more important than your health.  You have the knowledge and there are plenty of peers out there you can tap into for support.  The sooner you take this step, the sooner you will get to a place that you love, dealing with people who are also passionate about living a life they love and designing the life you have always dreamed of.

I wish you all the best.

Dear Cutting Family

This is an open message to my beautiful children Kate, James, Molly and Anna.  I am writing this on my blog so you will always know where to find it.  I love you all very, very much. I want you to have the best life you can, you deserve it.  To achieve a great life here are some ideas I would like to plant in your minds.

  • Chase your dreams, and make them big dreams!
  • Dreams will change and that’s OK, we are all on a journey but need direction.  If your direction changes then pursue your new dream as hard as you can.
  • The ultimate goal is happiness, and you strive to be happy every day.
  • Work on and be aware of your physical, mental, spiritual and emotional well being.
  • You can do whatever you want to do, provided you write it down, plan each day and take daily actions to get there. Mindmap your personal plan each year, use this as your motivation to stay on track.
  • There will be tough times in your life but if you chase your dreams, look after yourself, you will get through these and have a very happy life.
  • I love you.
  • Never be afraid to stand up for what you think is right.
  • Breath.
  • Write down your personal values and use them as your guide.  Read this journal on a regular basis. You can find my values on this website tonycutting.com
  • Be great at whatever you do, whether you like it or not.
  • Relationships are two-way streets, make sure your future partner understands your dreams and goals.  Make sure you understand theirs. Should your paths take you in different directions, so be it.  The sooner you get on with your plan the better for both of you.
  • Life is for the living and it does not need to be too serious, make it FUN. Make it your very own game, a game you know you are winning.
  • I love you
  • Don’t take sh#t from anyone.  Try not to hurt anyone. Respect everyone.
  • Work hard to be healthy and happy.  Money should never be the goal but it is OK to be financially well off.  Save 10% of your income for your nest egg and invest wisely so it creates another revenue stream for you.
  • You don’t always have to work for someone else, build the life you dream of and dream BIG. Take control.
  • Take risks if you think they may help you head in the right direction, and don’t worry if you make a mistake.  Everyone makes both big and small mistakes. Learn.
  • Meditate.
  • There are people in the world who won’t like you, and people who will make you feel sad.  Forget them and lose them fast. There are plenty of people who will love and support you, these are the people you spend time with.
  • Take regular walks on the beach, in the native bush, or in a beautiful park.
  • Look after the planet.
  • I love you.
  • Be kind.
  • Chase experiences and adventures, not objects.
  • Hangout with people you love and people who are as focused as you, to succeed.
  • Drink lots of water. Try not to drink too many poisons each weekend. Give your body more love than hate.
  • Stay away from drugs.
  • Work out what fuels your body works best,  and feed it this.
  • No smoking
  • More activity less TV.
  • Let the universe know what your intentions are through positive actions, it will reward you when you do.
  • I love you.
  • Look after your mother.

If you ever need my support do not hesitate whatever it is – ring me.  Wherever I end up in this world I will always be thinking of you, every day and every night.

I LOVE YOU.

Dad x.

Happiness

How do you feel right now?  Are you happy?  If not it is time to make some changes.

The psychological and philosophical pursuit of happiness began in China, India and Greece nearly 2,500 years ago with Confucius, Buddha, Socrates, and Aristotle. We can find remarkable similarities between the insights of these thinkers and the modern “Science of Happiness.” – Source http://www.pursuit-of-happiness.org

Let’s face it, if we are not happy then we are wasting our time aren’t we?

I grew up in the greatest place on the planet, Hongoeka Marae.  Every one of my cousins that I grew up with will tell you the same thing.  We certainly did not come from families with money but we did come from a community that loved and cared for each other.  As kids, we were enabled to explore our talents, we were encouraged to get outside and play, we all had a roof over our heads and food in our belly’s.  We learnt from all our whanau (in my case my Mum, Nana, Poppa, Nane and many Uncles and Aunties who lived in Hongoeka Bay). We were very happy and that is what everyone wanted for everyone (well most of the time anyway).

When I was older and study organisation and management I discovered Maslow’s Theory and the first thing they came to my mind was that we had all the elements of his pyramid.  We may have not had much money but we did not even realise this because we were rich in all the elements that create a great life – We were happy.

maslow-hierachy-of-needs-min

Maslow’s Theory

As you can see from the image above there is no mention of Money.

In January 2015 I was diagnosed with a brain tumour, luckily it was benign and it would be removed via brain surgery in June 2015.  The next three years I have been recovering from this surgery which has resulted in an expected complication, damage to my pituitary stalk. This means I take a number of drugs on a daily basis to help replace the hormones which would normally be regulated from this area.

I am the father of four, my wife works but her salary alone does not cover all the bills.  Our savings and insurance claim ran out within 18 months and we were struggling.

I was not happy nor was the rest of my family.  At Fifty Four years old I have made the biggest decision in my life, to return to the happiness formula I knew so well when I was younger.

First things first.  Get as fit and healthy as I can.  Gym five days per week and eat healthy for at least six days per week.  Build a business I love (Personal Coaching and Digital Marketing) I love technology and using it to help people grow.

Create experiences and memories and spend time with both my loved ones and my wider whanau and friends.  Meditate. Help others in my community as much as I can and be grateful for the skills I have and the people around me.  Collect experiences not things. Grow. Try new things and just enjoy myself.

I am back on track, I hit Fifty-five years old this month, with the rest of my life ahead of me.  I have a plan and its foundation is happiness.  I have ambition and will make more than enough to pay off the credit cards and reduce the mortgage which has been leveraged to help us get by.  But money is not my driver – Happiness is.

I hope you find this helpful.

The 5 essential ingredients for success

Kia ora Koutou,

Throughout my life, I have been successful in many ways.  I have genuinely succeeded in most things I put my heart and soul into.

At a young age, I was a very happy kid and I was a good sportsman and during my school years fell in love with cross country running (I know, what was I thinking?), but I truly did.  In standard three (year 5) the school had its annual cross country races and to my complete surprise, I managed to come in 2nd place, to my schoolmate Richard Barlow. During that year I would try my hardest to beat him but I would suffer from stitch and could never seem to take him albeit he would only beat me by a few metres in the end.

I was playing football and my grandad would travel 40 kilometres to pick me up and take me to my games. During our conversation on the way to football, grandad asked me how school was going and I told him about my stitch.  he smiled and simply said, “Start singing while you run” and “train harder”.

The following week I did what grandad had told me.  I was pretty fit anyway but I started to run more and during my runs, I would sing “Waltzing Matilda” a song my grandparents taught me, which seem to work.  Singing helps you to regulate your breathing and it’s a great way to prevent stitch.

The next week I beat Richard by a decent margin.  I went through Plimmerton School as a champion at cross country and even in the first form (year 7), I was fastest in the school being able to beat all the kids in the year above.  At the regional competition, I run for the school as a senior during both my First and Second forms (year 7 & 8) and won my races by a few hundred metres each time.

The reason I was so good was pretty simple, I loved what I did, I received great advice, I trained well, I was lucky to be in a school that encouraged kids to run cross country and I had some competition to keep me sharp, I was a very happy kid.

This is very similar to the Five step formula, I and many other coaches will tell you, to be successful in life.

 #1: Do what you love
You spend a lot of time at work, it is so important you do what you love or over 50% of it is wasted.

#2: Just do it
As Nike tells us to. Find a way to follow your dreams, the fact you are following your own plan will make you happier even though you may need to work for someone else or work towards the career you will love. Don’t wait for the stars to align, they only align when they know from your actions what you want to do.  Make it clear to them and they will respond in kind.

A little bit of planning is good, but that’s all you need.  Passion and positive actions will do the rest.

#3: Surround yourself with success-minded people
One of the reasons I set up my business networking groups in the area I live is to ensure I am working with like-minded people.  When you are surrounded by successful people you can learn from each other and gain the knowledge you need faster than you can by yourself.

Celebrated success expert Jim Rohn, who is no longer with us, used to talk about something he called the Law of Averages – average the income of the five people you hang out with the most, and that’s what your income is likely going to be.

This is because the way that people tend to think is contagious.

Ensure you spend regular time with people who are positive and looking to achieve BIG dreams, they support you and your dreams, do this and your clients and your business or career will benefit!

#4: Don’t stop growing
Don’t settle for what you have in life.  Demand more of yourself think of ways you can not only continue to grow yourself but help those positive people around you.  Learn and help others, If we all did this, the world would be a much better place.

#5: Smile
People love to deal with happy people.  Whenever you are feeling a little lost, take a good look at yourself and start working on getting your smile back.  Make the changes you need in your life to bring back the happy you.

My biggest success is my family, they not only make me proud to be their dad they also help me smile when times get tough.  I am very grateful to have been blessed with such a wonderful whanau.

Get off your arse! and move!

We live in times that are causing more disease and chronic illness than 60 years ago.  Funny enough our eating habits, exercise, sleep patterns and ability to sit still are also extremely different and not in a good way.

Now, normally I am the last to enter the world of chatting about health due to my many issues over my 54 years.  However, in some ways, my experiences are being repeated by the people I love so I thought I would share my knowledge and what I am doing now to fight the ageing process and focus on having a happy healthy life.  The changes I have been making are now helping me through possibly the most difficult time of my life  – multiple losses of people I love.

So how am I coping…

The biggest problem in our modern lifestyles is STRESS often this is the cause or the reason we do not look after ourselves.  My life has been a up and down see-saw of being pretty good until my mid 20s then being bad, being bad, being bad intervention (Liver problems) being good, being good, being good, being bad, being bad, being bad, (Broken Leg) being sad, being sad, being sad, buying my dream property, being good, being good, being good, being bad, being bad, feeling super stressed making a massive bad call with my business decisions, sudden drop of revenue, sale of my dream home I worked so hard for, doing jobs I hated to try and get back the income I lost, being bad, being bad (Brain Tumor), being sad (x100), being good, loss of loved ones being good, being good…

OK, the paragraph above paints a very grim picture and that is the point I am making.  The thing is for most of this time I have been pretty happy because I have a beautiful family and that’s all that mattered (I thought), I had some great times and outwardly my life seemed pretty good.  I built some very successful businesses and made a very good income and these skills I am proud of and still have today.

Reality check. The ‘being bad’ above refers to STRESS and looking after my health, it refers to bad diet, many sleepless nights caused by very bad habits, and most recently my lack of exercise.

So at 54, I am making a massive change, I making stress my mortal enemy (Funny enough it is for all of us).  I am getting through the loss of my loved ones by eating better (not perfectly yet), daily meditation, daily exercise (for me right now the big one) and making sure I do the things needed to give myself the best chance of having a great nights sleep.  Bed at 8:30 no technology (includes TV) after 7pm.

There is nothing wrong with making money, you just need to make sure you are looking after yourself.  I see many marriage breakups that should not be happening today, obese people (like myself) are far too common, where we try every diet under the sun and hit plateaus and try the latest fad.  The reality is 95% of this time it is because of STRESS!  Breaking up is not the solution to your marriage issues, caring for each other and working on stress is, eating well but not losing weight? changing your diet and stressing about it will not help, working on decreasing the stress will.

There are many things we need to change to work on our health, some could be small adjustments but for most of us, our evening and night-time habits need a major overall.

What has been a MASSIVE help to me was a small investment in the Calm app.  Not only does it help me meditate 10 minutes a day but the masterclass section has a great tutorial from Dr Rangan Chatterjee on the four pillars of health.  The Dr explains things very well and can give you the simple tips to help improve your lifestyle and health.  If you are like me then, yes maybe some big changes are in the wind.

So the message right now for myself is to get off my arse and move.  That means taking many breaks from my PC and moving around the house, doing some housework, ensuring I maximise the walking opportunities by doing simple things like parking in the farthest carpark when picking up groceries and walking up my stairs 3-4 times in one go, several times a day, going for a walk for about 30 minutes a day. The 10,000 steps rule is a good guide, so use it. As well as this I meditate, go to bed early, watch very little TV or Netflix, avoid technology, try to eat well most of the time (added bonus here of saving money), get outside when the sun is out to charge your batteries and a number of other things you will find mentioned on the app.

Please take care of yourself

BTW I am not paid to promote the Calm app.  I am just so happy I found it.

Yes, I want to be a digital marketing expert.

So, I am already a successful digital marketer and personal coach who loves to help people chase their dreams.  If you want to check I am the real deal the best thing is to visit my local group www.kapitinow.co.nz

Kapiti Now is a project in my local area I started about four years ago.  I now generate a small income from this project which is great. The main benefit of this project was it has helped me grow my brand locally and learn how to make things work.

On the personal front, I am 54 years young and have four beautiful children who are the centre of my world and at times my greatest teachers.  I started my commitment to this journey after surviving a brain operation at 50 which woke me up to the fact I wanted to really enjoy the rest of my life, doing mahi (work) that meant something and spending time with people who want to succeed and do something with their lives. So during the three years (yes three years) of recovery I have spent my time building my local project, reading as much as I could, listening to audio books, learning how to great photos and video on my iPhone and designing my future.

My Iwi, Ngati Toa Rangatira. I was raised at Hongoeka Marae in the beautiful seaside town of Plimmerton about half an hours drive from Wellington.  I am now based on the Kapiti Coast which is only another 30 minutes up the road from my spiritual home of Hongoeka.

I have several projects that generate an income the biggest being www.jobcafe.co.nz which is used to help organisations ensure their jobs are marketed to the people they are targeting.  JobCafe also markets people who are growing a personal business or looking for a job.  This pays me most days and is now allowing me to put my energy into this project “Creating New Zealand’s greatest team of Digital Marketing specialists”.

If you are new to Digital marketing and want to learn and possibly create your own business or if you already have a business and want to grow it then this blog will help provide insights into me and into what digital marketing is all about and how to become an expert.

Over the next three months, I will be publishing my day to day actions, providing some coaching, insights, observations and showing people what I do, and how I allocate my time to maximise what I want to achieve.

During this time if you like what I am doing and want to become a digital marketer you can contact me via the Facebook page I have set up for this project and I will go over how we can work together and help each other build great digital businesses. The partners I am looking for, live in an area they love and want to promote it while also generating an income.  They will also want to build a brand that enables them to generate income from many streams around the world.

Personal Development on a budget #1

Too many people do not start down the path of investing in their own personal development as they perceive it to be too expense.  Or they feel they know it all or are too old to get into this personal development malarky…

Lesson one – we are never too old and we should always be spending sometime time each week working on the most important person in our lives – us.  With the knowledge we can help those we love, otherwise, we may just be adding to the problem.

Over the next series of blogs, I am going to share some of my coaching secrets and provide you with great tools at low, low cost to help you get started on your personal development journey.  I just ask if you like the blog please share it with your friends and family whether they be close enough to talk with or connected to you on LinkedIn or Facebook.

If you’re on a serious budget, I recommend you start to read, yes read.  If you don’t like reading – get over it.  Just start.  Once you have read a book you really like and you ‘Feel’ (you know deep down in your gut, or in your heart) that there are valuable lessons in it, read it again and right down the lessons learnt or highlight within the book.  Then share it with the ones you love and talk about it.  Teaching is a great way to learn!

#1 My personal go-to resource I use to sort out my clients thinking about money, wealth and debt.  This gem saved my bacon and I personally make sure all my children read this when they start their first part-time jobs as teenagers.  Of course, they need reminding a few hundred times afterwards but at least as a parent, we have done our jobs.

It costs less than $US 10.

The Richest Man in Babylon.

The Richest Man

I promise you, this is the book I recommend to all my clients, friends and family.  I read it once a year and just re-enforce the lessons from within.

You will love it.  Give it a read then visit my website and let me know what you think.

Take Care and ‘Live the life YOU design’

Ingrid Moonflower

The history of the Moonflower family

A long, long time ago, in fact over ten thousand years ago, on an Island somewhere in the south Pacific Ocean was a beautiful enchanted forest.  At the middle of this forest, existed a large oval meadow, surrounding a pretty, little cottage, and around the cottage was the most beautiful garden you can imagine.

The cottage had a red roof and a red door and the entire home was crafted from kauri out of the forest.  Close by a rambling stream with the purest water drifted through the property.

OK try to imagine it then!

No, more beautiful than that, in fact so beautiful it had its own guardian, a happy witch called Asil Gnittuc.  Asil spent all her time caring and nurturing the garden which was filled with flowers of all different shapes and sizes, every colour was represented in the garden.  It also contained the most wonderful vegetables, herbs – all the witch needed to live on.

The cottage and garden were well protected by the surrounding forest which consisted of fifty-foot-high kauri and twenty-foot-high manuka tree’s, strong flax, kowhai and a magical plant ‘grosia’ created by Asil herself, used to fill in all the gaps left by the native forest so no one could see through to the meadow and garden.  In fact, the only way you could find this meadow was if you flew directly over the top – very safe since there were no planes or helicopters in those days.

The forest was filled with a thousand different types of birds, they made beautiful music every day, and woke Asil every morning.

Asil loved all her plants, but her most favourite of all was her stunning moonflowers.  The moonflowers flowered at night and were the prettiest of all the flowers, tall and beautiful they would dance in the breeze and provide a magical happy feeling throughout the late evening until dusk.  They then withered and hid until the following evening.  They were always at their brightest and happiest when the full moon shone directly down on the meadow.

Life was wonderful for Asil and her plants. Until one horrible day.

It was a Munday (Asil’s calendar is a little different to ours) and just before noon she heard the most horrible screaming, screeching, whining sound.  To Asil’s horror she recognised the sound of her horrible, wicked sister ‘Annod’ flying on her broomstick, she must have found her somehow?

Annod, always teased her when they were kids, unlike the friendly, nature-loving Asil she liked to destroy beautiful things and although she was unable to hurt people due to a spell placed on her by a wise old auntie, she would make their life’s miserable by destroying the things they loved.  Annod destroyed all the gardens Asil cared for when they were young.

Annod despised Asil as she was the family favourite and had decided she would only use her magic for good.  Annod would use her magic for evil and cause misery. Her one goal in life was, in fact, to make Asil’s life a misery.

They were both raised on an island halfway around the world and Asil had never thought her wicked sister would be able to find her, hidden thousands of miles away, but somehow, she had.

Annod swooped over the meadow and immediately attacked Asil’s beautiful purple roses destroying them all, Asil distressed summoned water from the stream and fired it straight back at her sister, pushing her over the forest.

Asil knew her sister would return once she got her strength back, and would keep returning until all the garden was destroyed.  She went back into her house and looked for an ancient spell given to her by the same auntie who had taken away her sisters’ ability to hurt people.

The only problem was, it would only work once.  She rushed out to her garden, it was starting to go dark and she spotted her beautiful Moonflowers, they had to be saved.

She waved her wand and muttered the ancient words ‘plantasious humanis’ concentrating her spell on her beautiful moonflowers. They all disappeared under the soil.

Thirty minutes later Annod swooped in for a final attack and plundered and destroyed the garden.  She entered the cottage and Asil had left.  Asil had taken off knowing once her sister had figured it out she too would leave the island.  Asil decided she could never to return, but her precious children would now be safe.

Ten nights later the full moon rose and shone brightly over then meadow.  What came out of the soil that night was the most beautiful beings ever created by a witch on this earth – The Moonflowers.

Fast Forward ten thousand years…

Ingrid moonflower, always knew she was different from other people on the Kapiti Coast.  Her family had originally lived in a beautiful forest on Kapiti Island but a few hundred years ago, her great, great, grandad had decided it was time to move to the mainland.  They landed at Waikanae Beach and made a home there.

Ingrid’s dad was a natural when it came to gardening and made a great living teaching and helping other people on the Kapiti Coast how to care and nurture their plants.  Ingrid also had this natural gift but was pursuing a different career. The family for generations were vegetarian, only drank water, exercised every night, were always smiling, loved their lives and made the most of every day (and night) and lived long, healthy lives.  In fact, if you checked records at the local medical centre – they do not exist.

When she was young, Ingrid attended Waikanae Playcentre, where she enjoyed playing with the other kids but found she needed a nap by lunchtime, especially when the sun was at its peak in the day sky.  She always seemed to get a second wind around dusk and would stay up far later than any normal kid.

At Kapanui Primary School she again did well, getting on with nearly every kid, she had a caring and nurturing nature and became very popular.  She was especially known for her ability to play and stay up very late at sleepovers.

The same pattern followed when she attended Paraparaumu College, sluggish in the afternoon and more energised in the evenings, although a natural in the science’s and biology, she had a calling to pursue a career looking after and caring for people.

She had some clear differences that set her apart from many of her friends, but as a teenager, she seemed to fit into the pattern of life they led quite easily.

Present Day

Ingrid is studying ‘Psychology’ at Victoria University, her passion for learning about and caring and nurturing people had provided her with many options.  However, working out what made people tick, fascinated Ingrid more than anything else.

Her natural abilities and knowledge that seemed to flow through her blood vessels were how to look after plants.  She knew if you cared for and nurtured plants, providing them with the right food, sunshine, water, and keep the nasty bugs from destroying them ‘dad said they were created by a horrible witch 10,000 years ago,’ then you had the formula to could grow big healthy plants.

She wanted to know how you grew big healthy people.

Ingrid worked best at night, she studied hard and found she had abundant energy when the moon was at its biggest and brightest.

Her days from lunchtime on would be a struggle, she wondered if her true ancestors were from Italy or Spain, she had read they took afternoon siesta’s and rested until dusk.  Her father always laughed when she mentioned this, he always said many of the family had left the island hundreds of years ago and shifted to these countries.

At the weekend’s, she was the life of the party, able to stay up all night, her happy caring nature making others feel great as well.  None of them had as much energy or could stay up as long as Ingrid, it was her ‘power’ they told her.

She is now into her third year at University, she is troubled by the need to stay in bed until very late in the morning and doing very little in the afternoon.  So, she studies at night, catches up with her lectures on-line in the evenings.

She can be very grumpy if you try to get her up early, but her parents understand.

After all, they do all their gardening and business activity after 4 pm and in the summer, they reduce their work to a few days per week.  They have staff who take care of business in the morning and early afternoon and are happy with the overtime during the hottest months of the year.  ‘Do you think that is why the family was given the name Moonflower?’ they often would ask each other? When they need, they have plenty of energy in the evening and early hours to catch up on paperwork.

What Ingrid has learnt so far is people are like plants with only one major difference.  You need to care for them, nurture their whole being (Body, mind and soul), give them the right food and regular water (at least eight glasses a day).  The big difference is they need to move, her studies seem to confirm an absolute minimum of thirty minutes walking a day and her recommendation is one-hour movement or more every day (or night if you are a moonflower).

The other thing she figured out, there are more moonflowers around the world but for some reason, they had different surnames.  Apparently, they changed their family name for safety?

What do you think? are you a moonflower?

Building your brand

Whether you are a business, organisation or an individual, building your brand is the one activity that starts when you are born and will continue with you until your final days.  A great brand will live on forever in the memories of those you touched positively while a bad brand will suddenly find you losing customers, employment opportunities, partners, family and friends.

So what is your brand?

More than a 150 years ago, cattle ranchers used branding irons to indicate which animals were theirs.   As the cattle moved across the plains on their way to the slaughter house, it was easy to determine which ranches they were from because each head of cattle was branded.

In modern days “your brand” is almost related to everything you do.  Celebrities live and die on their brand and believe it or not so do we as individuals, companies and not for profit organisations.  A brand today relates to how we look, how we are perceived by those who already know us, how we act, how we present ourselves, what we say, how we use Social Media (Yes, especially for you teenagers it’s how you use Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat).  Almost every action we take can have a positive or negative impact on our brand.  Today building your brand and destroying your brand is getting easier and easier.

For Business

Companies for years have understood about building their brands, you only have to look at the impact Coke has made over the last few decades with highly successful advertising and brand building campaigns depicting that Coke drinkers lead youthful, fun and exciting lives – and they have been extremely successful.  Today they have to counter the negative reality that too much sugar in our diet is detrimental to our health.  So how will they ‘save’ their brand?  Changing the makeup of Coca Cola may not have the desired effect as the Coke brand is built on the way it looks and tastes, and how it makes us feel, for many the taste they use to love is now too sickening to drink.

So, will sales of ‘Pump’ water save Coca Cola?

Most organisations looking to hire people understand the importance of their employment branding, well you hope they would.  The reality is many organisations over the past few years have forgotten what a brand really is and although they may have been painting a wonderful story with some expensive advertising campaign, the very recruitment process backing up this campaign is quickly destroying their brand and their ability to hire the top talent they really want.  They have basically taken the ‘human’ side out of the recruitment process in order to streamline the hunt for staff, instead of focused on the full brand experience and understood that the first real contact made with people needs to be treated in a very different manner.  Of course there are many organisations who have woken up to this mistake and are taking their recruitment a lot more seriously.

The ATS systems are being replaced by people dedicated to finding the right people for their teams, recruitment a skill that most hiring managers use to have in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s is now back in the hands of those educated managers who understand the value of taking the important responsibility of identifying the people they are looking to hire, and building a relationship with them, reducing the risk of hiring them by evaluating and reserching their backgrounds while understanding that they too are representing the organisations brand,  and setting a strong impression with their own personal brand.

Hiring people in the future is going to look a lot different from the late 90’s and today.  Well for the organisations that want the top talent it will.

For individual people

As we become more successful in whatever field we choose to pursue our brand grows and depending on the way we act, or more important are seen to act our brand is established in people’s minds.  Yes, brands are only established by the way people think about us.

So like anything in the mind a brand can be changed, or built on, or if we are not careful destroyed.  The fact is whatever we do we will build a brand that some people will love, some people will like and some people may not care for.  The trick for us as individuals is taking the time to think about building the brand we would like to have with people we like to live, work and play with.  We also need to understand it is very hard to build one brand so those who try and juggle two (My ‘business’ brand & my ‘personal’ brand) will not only find this task difficult but if they have distinct differences, you are more than likely going to ‘get’ found out.  Your true brand is the one you will be buried with.

How do I build my brand?

The tricky thing is to understand what we are looking to build.  My personal approach albeit a little morbid, is for you to take sometime to think about the end.  Imagine your funeral, what are the people (who turned up) saying about you, to each other (not your eulogy, cause thats more likely going to be only focused on the positive) but what are they really saying about you.

Next step is, what would you like them to say about you? This is your brand.  Now you can go about working on how to build it.

The next stage is to decide what values you would like to live by, and try and apply those when you approach your daily life.  Building a strong positive brand takes hard work, but if you are consistent, persistent and true to yourself you can build a great brand.  Because a great brand is not only about how we look, act, treat others and contribute to our chosen communities, workplaces, clients it’s about how we think and more importantly how everyone around us who cares to know us and who really does not know us thinks about us.

Don’t just think about how your future client or boss thinks about you.  Think as much about the person at reception who gets that first impression from you (yes they will share it with their boss).  Think about the person you provided services too as much as about the person you provide services for. Think about those people who may know the people you know, think about the stranger or future employer or client who reads your Facebook page posts, personal website, or LinkedIn profile and you will really start to get an understand what your brand truly is.

Is it time to work on your brand?
